Oka Curvy Pendant Lamp Shade
Share
The Oka pendant shade is hand woven in Ghana from locally sourced elephant grass, using the centuries-old bolga technique that originated in the Bolgatanga region of the north. Each shade is made entirely by hand, the grass split, twisted, and softened with water over about a week before weaving even begins, then woven over three to five days into its curved, gourd-like form.
The result is a lightweight, sculptural shade in natural straw tones, with a moderate size that suits a single hang or a cluster at staggered heights over a console, bench, or dining table. The open weave casts a soft, warm light.
Behind the design
The Oka is made by artisans through Indego Africa, which invests its profits into education and entrepreneurship programs for the women who handcraft its products and youth in their communities. Each piece supports skilled work and access to the global market.
Because each shade is hand woven from natural grass, some variation in size and color is normal. No two are identical.
